Immediately after my first knitting class, I purchased this beautiful blue, super bulky, 100% merino wool yarn made by Malabrigo, Rasta in Azules (#856) from the KnitBham shop downtown (but you can also click the link and get some directly from WoolandCo. I also grabbed my first pair of wooden Lykke Driftwood Circular Knitting Needles in a dark grey driftwood color, size 15. I knew the yarn would be perfect to make something for Charlie as soon as I saw it in one of the storage cubbies next to the giant wooden table we use for class. Her absolute favorite color is blue, and this yarn has so many shades of it, and they are blended together beautifully. I got started on it as soon as I got home. I was nervous she might not like it, but she saw me working on it and immediately asked if I could make her something with it (not knowing that was already my plan) – yay! This yarn is insanely soft without those annoying (to me) fibers that float off and make my nose itch and sneeze. It is hand-dyed with vibrant colors and will keep my sweetpea cozy and warm in the coming cooler season, even though this is Alabama, where the swamp-ass season lasts approximately 9 months out of 12. But I figure that just gives me plenty of time to finish this project and make her a gift (and hopefully start one for her sister)! I bought two cakes of the yarn to make sure it would be long enough for her because while she’s only 11, she’s almost my height already (I’m 5’3), and I want this to be something she can have to remember me by, for years to come. One area of concern is that I don’t know how to connect the two cakes of yarn together mid-scarf without it making an ugly knot – I don’t think I can just tie it? I’m hoping to learn how to blend the second cake into the scarf seamlessly in the second knitting class on Saturday. I’ll have to be sure to make enough progress on this during the week so that I finish off the first cake in time. But for now, I decided to use what I learned in class already and am using the basic garter stitch to make her scarf. Wish me luck, and stay tuned!
